Professional Development Events 2012
Based on the results of a survey of Queensland members of the Public Health Association of Australia we have a number of exiting professional development events planned for 2012.
Advocating for change in the real world This workshop adressed the question: 'How do you advocate for a public health issue?' When: Monday 20th August 2012, 5:30pm to 6:45pm Where: Cancer Council Queensland Auditorium, 553 Gregory Terrace, Fortitute Valley | PHAA-QLD developed the Maximising Population Health: An Innovative Model of Health Reform for Queensland, in response to the current health reform process which focuses on decentralisation of services. PHAA-QLD believes the establishment of a single public health workforce (or institute) would see the best outcome of health within Queensland.

Introduction to R
This workshop conducted by Dr Adrian Barnett, Associate Professor at the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovations & School of Public Health at the Queensland University of Technology. The workshop provided a basic introduction for new users of R and we received some great feedback from the participants.

2011 PHAA National Conference
The Queensland Branch was excited to host the 41st PHAA Annual Conference in Brisbane from 25th to 28th September, 2011. 346 delegates attended the conference, which had the them of SUSTAINABLE POPULATION HEALTH. The conference hosted a range of international and local speakers including Prof Peter Newman, Prof Martin McKee, Prof Sally MacIntyre, Prof Sally Redman, Prof Tony Capon, and Prof Lisa Jackson Pulver. The topics presented generated great debate and discussion among attendees and the feedback from the conference was overwhelmingly positive.
The Queensland Branch sponsored two awards at the conference.

Trivia Night
A fabulous night was had by all on the 5th November, 2010 with the inaugral Trivia night! We raised $880 for the Smiling for Smiddy Foundation! Thanks to all who came along and participated in the fun.
Elkington Oration The 2010 Elkington Oration was held on Thursday April 15, 2010 and we were delighted to have Professor W Phillip T James from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine present "Why the future of food is important for health". Professor James is Chair of the International Obesity Task Force and presented an engaging and stimulating oration to an audience of almost 70 people. Professor Larry Green
In February, PHAA-QLD sponsored a keynote address by Professor Larry Green at the Australasian Society for Behavioural Health and Medicine Conference in Brisbane. Professor Green, Co-Leader of the Program on Society, Diversity and Disparities at the University of California, San Fransisco spoke on, "If we want more evidence-based practice, we need more practice-based evidence".
At the conclusion of the conference, PHAA members were invited to meet Professor Green and his wife, Associate Professor Judith Ottoson. We were delighted to be able to facilitate teh opportunity to meet Larry and Judith who are not only leaders in their fields but also friendly and engaging people. Some members travelled from Cairns to meet Larry!
Valentine's Day Breakfast
In February, PHAA-QLD sponsored a table at a breakfast seminar held by Emily's List to allow members to hear Dr Caroline de Costa, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Director of the Clinical School at James Cook University of School of Medicine, speak on the challenges facing women in Queensland who wish to procure an abortion. The challenges and barriers to changing laws in Queensland were also dicussed.
